Welcome to The Therapy Room
Musings of the mind, body, heart and soul from the world of psychology, yoga and life
This human life is a messy and complex business and if I’ve learned one thing along the way, it’s that it helps to share it. So I’ve created this space to offer my musings and reflections from 20+ years in the world of clinical psychology, yoga and trauma healing. We’ll touch on themes of the mind, body, heart and soul. I’ll be weaving together the personal with the universal and sharing some insights from my own tangled journey through the decades. If you’ve ever wanted a peek inside the mind of a therapist (without the consulting fees) you’re in the right place.
Therapy rooms have traditionally been very closed spaces, shrouded in myth, mystery and stigma. I’d love this space to contribute to opening the door of the therapy world, de-mystifying psychology and sharing insights that can help in your own life journey, regardless of whether you are therapist, client or neither. We are all wounded survivors of life in one way or another and we are all doing our best to walk the path towards a happier, more easeful life.
I’ve spent more than two decades sitting alongside people as they navigate their way through the hardest parts of their lives and it’s an immense privilege to do this work. The most beautiful, raw, intimate and heart-opening conversations take place in my therapy room. It’s a sacred space where deep listening and genuine connection can occur, more so than any of our other social contexts. It’s a space that nurtures me as much as I hope it nurtures others. A space where light bulbs illuminate as links and connections are made, where wisdom is woven amongst the complexities of hurt and pain. Where growth and healing are companioned and nurtured, seeds of new life are sown and incubated, and outgrown debris is released and returned to compost.
The whole cycle of life and human experience can be witnessed in the space of that room. On days when I’m mired in personal struggle, I’m reminded of the universality of our suffering and the deep compassion it deserves. Many days I leave softer, wiser, more present and centred than when I arrived. My clients are working their magic on me as much as the other way around.
I’ve spent many years on the other side of the therapy room too, receiving the wisdom of therapists and supervisors, as I’ve navigated my way through the hardest parts of my own life, including my journeys through grief, loss and chronic illness. It has changed me in many subtle and profound ways. I’ve also been opened to life’s wisdom through books, through yoga, through nature, and through living. I aim to share some of this with you, in a way that’s human and relatable. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I’ve learned a thing or two along the way.
I write about many different themes, often inspired by conversations that happen in my real-life therapy room, and tend to share whatever is capturing my interest at any given moment. You’ll find me writing on topics like:
Trauma healing and intergenerational trauma
The wisdom and philosophy of yoga
The pivotal role of nervous system health
Nature and spirituality as sources of healing
Chronic illness and my healing journey with autoimmune disease
Aging and the challenges of midlife
Relationships and attachment styles
Grief and loss
And much more…..
If any of this sounds like your cup of tea, I’d love you to join the community.
